Bolivian Amarali

I've done a pretty good job of staying focused on my Brazilian and Suriname BCC projects with the exception of these amazing boas. I obtained my first Bolivian from Tom Crutchfield in 2008(Terry Silver female). I was amazed to see how different these boas were in both morphology, coloration, and most of all behaviour. All of the Bolivians in my small collection are much more inquisitive than any of the BCC, and always come out of their hides while I'm working in the snake rooms. My large female will actually crawl out of her cage onto my extended hand when I open her cage. I have never seen this sort of behaviour in a boa or python for that matter. I liked this female so much I decided to get her a mate from Barry Miller in 2009. I paired these 2 up last season, witnessed numerous copulation sessions, observed an ovulation via ultrasound, but she never became gravid. I have them paired up again this season so hopefully things go better this time around.

Barry Miller produced 2 of the finest litters of Bolivians I've ever seen in 2008 and 2009, so I picked up one of each for my girlfriend Katie around Christmas of 2009. She really loves Bolivians, and I wanted to give her her own breeding project. It's really great having a girlfriend who appreciates these boas as much as I do. I lucked out by getting the last female from Barry's purple x blonde 2008 litter. The colors this female displays is just unreal. I have never seen such vivid purple coloration on a boa. Barry produced another amazing litter in 2009 from a knockout Red female that I've been drooling over for years. The combination of the Red female and the Platinum male produced some very uniquely colored offspring. I was lucky enough to get the hottest male in the bunch, with loads of red leaching out of the lateral markings. I can't imagine how these will turn out.

I don't expect to ever have a very large breeding group of Bolivians, but I will always have a strong interest in them. It's really amazing that most of the Bolivians in the US originated from a small group of imports brought in by Joe Terry. Some of the Old timers say that this original group of imports were very drab and unremarkable. These boas were selectively bred by Joe Terry, Tim Belknap, Kevin Barnett, Barry Miller, and Mark Bell eventually developing the currently recognized color phases - Blonde, Red, Purple, Orange Crush, and Silverback. It's quite amazing that all of this variation stems from a small group of imports brought into the US in the 80's.
